“We shot in Upstate New York at the peak of tick season,” says director Aliya Naumoff of filming Jena Malone for the new video for her musical project, The Shoe. “Jena was covered in bites and scratches, but kept performing nonetheless.” The Hunger Games actress started the duo with multi-instrumentalist Lem Jay Ignacio following an extended period of impromptu performances after the pair met at a party in 2008. They recorded their first album I’m Okay in California, distilling the sunshine of the Golden state into a series of intimate and improvisational indie tracks, with Malone creating the structure by tap dancing its beat with her feet. “I think music and my film work feed each other," says the Nevada-born Malone. “Learning how to improvise built up strengths in me as as an actor.” Naumoff cast choreographer Celia Rowlson-Hall as Malone’s co-star, who envisioned the video’s nymph-like movements. “She is somewhat of a Zen master and I knew she would kill it with the dance,” says the filmmaker. Inspired by the work of this year’s Deutsche Börse Photography Prize winner Richard Mosse, The New York Times contributor worked with a colorist to recreate the effect by keying green tones in the same way that infrared film would pickup chlorophyll: “When I saw his use of color, specifically with his work in the Congo, I was incredibly moved by the feeling it created.”

What inspired the track?
Jena Malone: I was driving north on the 395 to my childhood home of Lake Tahoe; I was only two weeks into writing and recording the album and had all these melodies swirling in my head. The sun was setting on the mountains and it was just so beautiful. Gorgeousness all around me. And I just started singing the main melody into my little voice memo on my iPhone. It quickly turned into a song about falling in love, looking for love, being happy for the search. I was also in the process of falling in love again, so I had a lot of beautiful things in my heart.

Do you remember your earliest experience of music?
JM: My mom was a singer and she would sing to me all the time. I think that's how I learned. I used to wander through the forest and build forts and just be alone with my imagination for hours when I must have only been six or seven, singing to myself the whole time.

What musicians or acts have had a strong impact on your own musical style?
JM: Nina Simone, Neil Young , Tom Waits, Daniel Johnston, PJ Harvey, Reba McEntire, Dolly Parton.

What's next for you, both acting and music-wise?
JM: The Hunger Games: Mockingjay films will start coming out this year. I also got to work with my favorite filmmaker of all time, Paul Thomas Anderson, on Inherent Vice, which should be coming out this Christmas. And we are touring this July with the band.

'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire' & Jennifer Lawrence Win Rembrandt Awards

Last night, the winners of the 2014 Rembrandt Awards were announced and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire took home the top honors for Best Foreign Film and Best Foreign Actress for Jennifer Lawrence's portrayal of Katniss Everdeen.

Jennifer Lawrence and the Catching Fire cast were actually informed of their win and given their awards on the red carpet of the Mockingjay party in Cannes. Take a look:

What are the Rembrandt Awards, you may be asking yourself? The annual Rembrandt Awards are the national public film awards of The Netherlands, first given out in 1993. The nominations are selected by members of the Film Committee and Jury of the Rembrandt Awards Foundation. The winners are selected by the Dutch public through online voting. Way to vote, Dutch tributes!

Sam Claflin is Glamour's Man of the Year + Natalie Dormer

Congratulations to Sam Claflin, Man of the Year at the GLAMOUR Awards 2014!

Sam walked the red carpet with his wife Laura Haddock, and talked about about the duo’s red carpet process.

“It’s a lot of shouting at one another ‘get me a cup of tea’; it’s not actually very stressful!” he shared.

Sam continued, “A guy and a girl, it’s a very different process. It’s easy for me to choose a suit but when she walks down the stairs, it’s like ‘wow’.” Cue the awws!

His Mockingjay and The Riot Club co-star Natalie Dormer was on hand to present him the award tonight.See it at the 3:21 mark in the video below.

Natalie talks a little about the Thai people adopting the Hunger Games salute as their symbol of revolution in the video below at about 1:24. Then Sam talks about Katniss Everdeen and Jennifer Lawrence at 1:39. 'Catching Fire' Wins Golden Trailer Award For Best Action Trailer

Lionsgate and Trailer Park have won a Golden Trailer Award in the Best Action category for their collaboration on The Hunger Games: Catching Fire "World Event" trailer. The "World Event" trailer was the one that debuted at Comic Con 2013. Let's watch it again, shall we?

The Golden Trailer Awards annually recognize the creative people who make movie trailers in 16 different categories. They even have their own awards gala, which was held on May 30th in Beverly Hills.

And while we're on the subject of trailers, Lionsgate, how about a Mockingjay Part 1 teaser?!?!? Pretty please?

Thais Protest Coup With ‘Hunger Games’ Salute

Many people in Thailand are adopting a symbol of resistance from The Hunger Games to protest their loss of civil and political rights as a result of last month’s military coup. Thais are using the three-fingered “District 12” salute as “a symbolic act of peaceful defiance.” The country has banned gatherings of more than 5 people, and the Southeast Asian nation’s ruling junta is pondering whether to officially ban the salute from The Hunger Games, now that is has become an emotionally charged symbol of resistance.

The Southeast Asian nation’s ruling junta is pondering whether to officially ban the three-fingered “District 12” salute from The Hunger Games, now that is has become an emotionally charged symbol of resistance among opponents of the May 22 military coup.

Already, scores of those proffering the salute during weekend street protests have been dragged off by troops, in scenes eerily reminiscent of the Suzanne Collins novels and movie franchise, which depict a dystopian future society ruled by the totalitarian Panem regime.

Image by Manik Sethisuwan Thai army deputy spokesman Colonel Winthai Suwaree told the Bangkok Post that the military top brass are discussing how best to respond to the barbed gesture. “[The junta] must look at [the protester’s] intention, what they want to communicate and surrounding circumstances,” he said.

Over the weekend, the sight of unarmed and peaceful protesters being detained for flashing three fingers — including a woman dragged into a taxi by plainclothes police in tourist-thronged central Bangkok — did little to assuage fears of what the military may have in store.

Brad Adams, director of Human Rights Watch’s Asia division, calls the Hunger Games salute “a symbolic act of peaceful defiance” amid a situation that “is spiraling downwards in terms of rights abuses.”

“The fact that the [junta] is closing down sections of the city to chase a handful of protesters reveals a totalitarian mind-set that discounts respect for human rights as a hindrance, and sees youthful defiance as the enemy,” he said by email.

Radio Times just released a new still from Sam Claflin and Lily Collins' upcoming film Love, Rosie. I wouldn't point any fingers there, Mr. Wet T-Shirt!

The movie comes out in October and, according to Radio Times, we should look for a new trailer to debut on Wednesday.

Jena Malone & The Shoe Play at Ibirapuera Park in São Paulo
