Everything We Know About the 50th Hunger Games: A Look at the 2nd Quarter Quell

The 50th Hunger Games/Second Quarter Quell - Let's Review!Get ready! Suzanne Collins' new book, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, is set to hit the shelves on March 18, 2025, with a film adaptation following on November 20, 2026. This installment takes us back to the 50th Hunger Games (the Second Quarter Quell), starting with the morning of the reaping.

We have yet to uncover the secrets of the new book, so let's delve into everything we DO know about the 2nd Quarter Quell from the previous books!

The Second Quarter Quell

A Quarter Quell is a special edition of the Hunger Games held every twenty-five years to mark the anniversary of the end of the First Rebellion. Each Quell introduces a twist in the reaping process, altering the selection of tributes in some way.

In the Second Quarter Quell, as a reminder that two rebels died for every Capitol citizen, twice the number of regular tributes were sent into the Games for a total of 48.

The Reaping in District 12

In the book, an unnamed girl and boy were reaped along with Maysilee Donner, whose twin sister and a young Mrs. Everdeen were seen clinging to each other in the crowd. Haymitch Abernathy was the last tribute called.

Did you know? Maysilee's twin grew up to be Madge Undersee's mother in Katniss's era. In the books, Madge was Katniss's school friend and was the one who gave her the Mockingjay pin (which originally belonged to her Aunt Maysilee!) before the 74th Hunger Games. So Katniss and Madge were friends, and Maysilee, Mrs. Undersee, and Mrs. Everdeen were friends growing up. The web of connections in the Hunger Games universe is truly fascinating.

Caesar Flickerman: Rocking the blue suit since the 50th Hunger Games

Pre Games

By the 50th Games, Caesar Flickerman was the Hunger Games host, and he was wearing his famous twinkling midnight blue suit.

In his interview with Caesar Flickerman, Haymitch came across as snarky, arrogant, and indifferent.

Caesar: "So, Haymitch, what do you think of the Games having one hundred percent more competitors than usual?"

Haymitch: "I don't see that it makes much difference. They'll still be one hundred percent as stupid as usual, so I figure my odds will be roughly the same."

The Arena

The 50th Hunger Games arena was a breathtaking place with a golden cornucopia in the middle of a meadow, surrounded by woods and a snowcapped mountain - later shown to be a deadly volcano. Everything in the Arena, including plants, water, and the scent of the flowers, was lethally poisonous, except for rainwater and the food from the Cornucopia. Some known muttations in the Arena included golden carnivorous squirrels, poisonous butterflies, and candy pink birds with long beaks.

Most tributes were distracted by the beauty of the Arena when the gong sounded, so Haymitch nabbed a backpack and weapons from the Cornucopia and headed into the woods. Maysilee got a small bag, which included a blowgun and darts.

A Career pack claimed the Cornucopia's remaining supplies, including the only safe food and drink in the Arena. Many tributes fell victim to the Arena's poisonous substances. Maysilee used these poisons to turn her darts into weapons.

Haymitch faced three Careers in the woods. Despite his smaller size, he was fast and dispatched two of them with his knife before he was disarmed by the third. Maysilee shot the remaining Career with a poison dart, and she and Haymitch became allies.

Haymitch and Maysilee in the Mainstay Pro fan film HUNGER GAMES: THE SECOND QUARTER QUELL

Haymitch and Maysilee did well as allies while continuing on a course Haymitch was determined to follow - trying to get to the Arena's edge. When they finally reached a cliff marking the end of the Arena, Haymitch refused to leave. Maysilee broke the alliance with only five tributes remaining.

Haymitch inadvertently discovered the force field when he kicked a pebble off the cliff, and it bounced back. He tested it by throwing a larger rock, which flew back into his hand. The sound of Maysilee screaming cut off his discovery. By the time he reached her, the pink birds had skewered her with their beaks, so all he could do was hold her hand until she was gone.

Haymitch and the District 1 female were now the final two tributes. In their bloody showdown, both sustained nearly fatal wounds. She chased him to the cliff and threw her axe, but Haymitch collapsed, dodging the attack. The force field flung the axe back into her head, leaving Haymitch as the victor.

The Aftermath

The Capitol felt Haymitch's stunt with the force field made them look foolish. In the weeks after the Games, they punished him by eradicating his family and girlfriend. Haymitch turned to alcohol to numb the loss of his loved ones and the despair of mentoring years of doomed tributes.

Seeing the March 2025 release date for the book makes me even more excited to dive into Haymitch’s point of view before the movie comes out in late 2026. Is anyone else already theorycrafting builds for the upcoming Slay the Spire 2?
I stumbled upon a wiki dedicated to the Slay the Spire 2 wiki community that’s listing cards, relics, and other mechanics that have been revealed so far.
Could be a handy reference if you like digging into early details.

I didn’t realize the Second Quarter Quell meant twice as many tributes—that detail really makes the stakes feel even more intense for Haymitch’s story sts2 wiki

I always forget that the Second Quarter Quell had 48 tributes instead of 24, which must have made the arena absolute chaos. Titan Fishing Skills List It really makes Haymitch winning feel even more impressive.

The Second Quarter Quell having double the tributes made the arena even more intense, and Haymitch’s clever use of the force field is still one of the most memorable victories in the series. Reading theories like this always reminds me how deep the Hunger Games lore really is. Sending a little geburtstag von herzen to all the fans still celebrating this amazing universe!
