Proudest accomplishment: “Without question, my kids. Not that I worked that hard in the early stages—a couple of grunts and a nap. I should have never said that. Oh, fuck. Yeah. My kids.”
Best day so far: “The day I met my wife Laura, which was on the set of Cheers. This media workshop from UCLA came by, and she was a part of it. This was the one time in eight years that we went and talked to them–Teddy [Danson] first, and then I talked a little while. I asked if anybody had secretarial skills, and she raised her hand. Before you knew it we were having a long talk, and she became my assistant. And after three years of that I gave her a raise.”
A big Happy Birthday to our Haymitch and our Plutarch! Woody Harrelson and Philip Seymour Hoffman celebrate their birthdays today. Our best to both of these amazing actors!

And then, of course, there’s The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Can you tell us how that’s coming along?
I haven’t seen it, but I’ve heard it’s looking great.
How does it feel for you to be part of a big juggernaut franchise? It’s the first time you’ve…
...it’s the first time I’ve been a part of something that’s a hit [laughs].
No, it’s just that being part of a huge blockbuster is not something people would associate with you.
I love it. I really love it. I said no at first. But the director called me and he said, “You’ve got to do this for me, I don’t have a second choice.” He was so passionate about it, and I thought, “Well if you want me to do it that bad, I’ll do it.” Just one conversation made me throw the dice. That was it, and now I’m part of this incredible franchise.
Were you surprised by how big it became?
Yes I was. I didn’t know what I was stepping into.
A lot of people have said Hollywood is relying too much on big franchises at the moment. Do you think that’s true?
Well, Hollywood is so many diverse things; you have indies that I love. But when you’re looking at studios, they need to make money. They’re giant corporations, so I understand that in getting something that is working, you stick with it. Most times, sequels aren’t as good as the original, and I hope that’s not the case for The Hunger Games. I haven’t seen it, but if it is as good, why not? I don’t have a moral issue with it, I get the idea. F*ck it. Do it.

Fans of Woody Harrelson (Haymitch) know that the environment is a cause near and dear to his heart. He's joined forces with Prairie Pulp & Paper to launch an new wheat based, tree-free paper called Step Forward Paper. Step Forward Paper is the first paper of it's kind to hit shelves in North America and is one of the most environmentally sustainable papers available.
MTV Act spoke with Woody about his new product and snuck in a bit about The Hunger Games:
ACT: Do you try to encourage recycling and other good things for the environment while on set?
WOODY: That’s interesting you say that, because it’s my big dream, and I think it’s going to happen … that The Hunger Games 3 and 4 are going to be the most ecological sets ever. I’ll talk to you more about that when it becomes a true reality, but I think that’s what is going to happen.
It’s difficult, because I’ve got to tell you that the film industry … there is a lot of waste, and it’s not the most ecological industry, I’ll tell you that. I’ve been really wanting to see that shift, and I’m trying to do my part.
ACT: Do you think you’ve encouraged the other actors on set to be more environmentally friendly?
WOODY: Yeah, I think so. It’s all about recycling, doing composting, and instead of everybody using paper or plastic cups, for everybody to have their own individual cup, to use this non-wood paper to make all the scripts and all the rewrites and everything like that. Using biodiesel for the generators. ... It’s a big, big thing. It’s a huge production, and it’s a lot to do to try to make it green, but it’ll happen.
ACT: If you were dropped into a Hunger Games-type arena today, do you think your love of nature would help you come out as the top tribute?
WOODY: Well, yeah, of course it would. Mother Nature is going to help me out in that context. Hopefully that never happens, though!
Well, there may have been no one, other than Lionsgate execs or something, more distraught than me when Gary Ross left. I was REALLY distraught because I love that guy. But I gotta say, Francis, he's fantastic. He's just a real gentleman, he's a super fun guy, and a great, great director. I mean, really knows what he wants, really understands action. Believe me, the whole Hunger Games franchise will not suffer from having him at the helm. He's just great. I haven't seen the second one so I better save these comments 'til later. But I heard it's great.
