The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping First Teaser Trailer, Poster, and Official Stills Released

Joseph Zada as Haymitch Abernathy in Sunrise on the Reaping

The first teaser trailer for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping has officially arrived, and the countdown to the 50th Hunger Games just got very real.

Lionsgate released the first teaser trailer, first official poster, and a set of new stills for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping on November 20, 2025, exactly one year before the film arrives in theaters and IMAX on November 20, 2026.

For fans of Suzanne Collins’ bestselling novel, this was the first major look at the world of young Haymitch Abernathy, the Second Quarter Quell, and the story that changed District 12 forever.

The First Sunrise on the Reaping Teaser Trailer Is Here

The teaser trailer gives fans their first official glimpse at Joseph Zada as Haymitch Abernathy, the District 12 tribute whose story sits at the heart of Sunrise on the Reaping.

Set decades before Katniss Everdeen volunteers for her sister, Sunrise on the Reaping follows the events of the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell. In this brutal anniversary Games, twice as many tributes are reaped from each district, a cruel twist that makes Haymitch’s story one of the most devastating chapters in Hunger Games history.

The teaser gives us quick but powerful flashes of the world fans have been waiting to see brought to life: the reaping in District 12, the Capitol’s control, the arena, and the emotional relationships that shape Haymitch before he becomes the mentor we know from the original trilogy.

The First Official Poster: “These Games Are Going To Be Different”

The first official teaser poster for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, featuring the snake and mockingjay emblem and the tagline “These Games Are Going To Be Different.”

Alongside the teaser trailer, Lionsgate also released the first official teaser poster for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.

The poster features the striking new emblem for the film: a snake and a mockingjay intertwined with flowers, greenery, and hints of fire. At the top, the tagline reads:

“These games are going to be different.”

The poster confirms the film’s release in theaters and IMAX on November 20, 2026.

New Official Stills Reveal Haymitch, Maysilee, and Lenore Dove

Lionsgate also released new official stills from The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, giving fans a closer look at several major characters from the film.

Joseph Zada as Haymitch Abernathy in Sunrise on the ReapingOne still shows Haymitch Abernathy at the reaping, walking between Peacekeepers as the children of District 12 are separated by age and gender. It is a chilling first look at the moment that changes his life forever.

Joseph Zada as Haymitch Abernathy and Mckenna Grace as Maysilee Donner in Sunrise on the ReapingAnother still shows Haymitch in the arena with Maysilee Donner, played by McKenna Grace. The image captures the intensity and danger of the Second Quarter Quell, with Maysilee holding a blowgun as the two tributes appear to react to something nearby in the woods.

The third still (above) offers a quieter, more emotional look at Haymitch with Lenore Dove Baird, played by Whitney Peak. The two sit together in a meadow with geese nearby, a softer image that immediately contrasts with the brutality of the Games. For readers of Sunrise on the Reaping, this moment carries enormous emotional weight.

Together, the stills give fans a first real sense of the film’s range: District 12, the arena, the Capitol’s violence, and the love story at the center of Haymitch’s life.

The Countdown to November 20, 2026 Begins

With the first teaser trailer now released, the road to The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping has officially begun.

The film arrives in theaters and IMAX on November 20, 2026, exactly one year after this first major reveal. Between the teaser trailer, the symbolic poster, and the emotional first stills, Lionsgate has given fans plenty to analyze, theorize about, and cry over until the next major update.

These Games are going to be different - and the fandom is already fully back in the arena!

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes BOOK vs MOVIE: The Death Order

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes death order BOOK version. Click for FULL SIZEThe Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes death order MOVIE versionLike the previous Hunger Games films, the movie adaptation of Ballad stays faithful to the source material, right down to many of the iconic quotes from the book. But at 500 + pages, things had to be changed to fit the film's 2-hour and 38-minute runtime. (We're still holding out for that 4-hour cut! 🙏)

Coriolaus and Lucy Gray Baird in the arena

One significant change between the book and movie is the structure of The Hunger Games themselves, which affected the tributes' deaths. The deaths of Marcus (Jerome Lance), Bobbin (Knox Gibson), Coral (Mackenzie Lansing), and Jessup (Nick Benson) stay pretty consistent between the two mediums, though in slightly different order. Others like Reaper (Dimitri Abold), Dill (Luna Steeples), Wovey (Sofia Sanchez), and Treech (Hiroki Berrecloth), and Mizzen (Cooper Dillon) meet different fates in the movie compared to their book counterparts.

In the novel, mentor Gaius Breen is hospitalized after losing both legs in the arena bombing. He survives for twelve days before succumbing to his injuries. In the film, mentor Felix Ravinstill is hospitalized and dies after a few days, prompting Dr. Gaul to send the snake mutts into the arena.
-
Dr. Gaul announcing Felix Ravinstill's death
In the book, Dr Gaul's snake mutts are deployed much earlier in the games - on Day 4. The snakes kill two tributes before Lucy Gray seemingly lures them to her and lulls them with her singing. The snakes die somewhat unceremoniously in the rain overnight. In the movie, they make a dramatic late entrance and play a pivotal role in concluding the competition, ultimately leading to Lucy Gray's victory.

In the book, it's Wovey who drinks from a poisoned water bottle that Lucy Gray leaves out for Coral, and Dill dies from complications due to tuberculosis early in the Games. In the movie, Dill drinks Lucy Gray's poisoned water, and the snake mutts overtake Wovey.

Lucy Gray and the poisoned waterIn the book, Mizzen falls to his death after being attacked by drones that Teslee hacked. In the film, he's one of the final tributes swarmed by Dr. Gaul's snake mutts.

In the book, Reaper manages to evade Dr. Gaul's rainbow snakes, and the competition for Victor comes down to him and Lucy Gray rather than Lucy Gray and Coral. In their final confrontation, Lucy Gray tries to tire Reaper out, knowing he previously contracted rabies from Jessup. In the end, Reaper dies when he drinks water from a puddle, not realizing Lucy Gray had contaminated it with rat poison. In the movie, Reaper is given a more noble and dramatic death. He stays perfectly calm and lets the snake mutts overcome him.

Everything We Know About the 50th Hunger Games: A Look at the 2nd Quarter Quell

The 50th Hunger Games/Second Quarter Quell - Let's Review!Get ready! Suzanne Collins' new book, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, is set to hit the shelves on March 18, 2025, with a film adaptation following on November 20, 2026. This installment takes us back to the 50th Hunger Games (the Second Quarter Quell), starting with the morning of the reaping.

We have yet to uncover the secrets of the new book, so let's delve into everything we DO know about the 2nd Quarter Quell from the previous books!

The Second Quarter Quell

A Quarter Quell is a special edition of the Hunger Games held every twenty-five years to mark the anniversary of the end of the First Rebellion. Each Quell introduces a twist in the reaping process, altering the selection of tributes in some way.

In the Second Quarter Quell, as a reminder that two rebels died for every Capitol citizen, twice the number of regular tributes were sent into the Games for a total of 48.

The Reaping in District 12

In the book, an unnamed girl and boy were reaped along with Maysilee Donner, whose twin sister and a young Mrs. Everdeen were seen clinging to each other in the crowd. Haymitch Abernathy was the last tribute called.

Did you know? Maysilee's twin grew up to be Madge Undersee's mother in Katniss's era. In the books, Madge was Katniss's school friend and was the one who gave her the Mockingjay pin (which originally belonged to her Aunt Maysilee!) before the 74th Hunger Games. So Katniss and Madge were friends, and Maysilee, Mrs. Undersee, and Mrs. Everdeen were friends growing up. The web of connections in the Hunger Games universe is truly fascinating.

Caesar Flickerman: Rocking the blue suit since the 50th Hunger Games

Pre Games

By the 50th Games, Caesar Flickerman was the Hunger Games host, and he was wearing his famous twinkling midnight blue suit.

In his interview with Caesar Flickerman, Haymitch came across as snarky, arrogant, and indifferent.

Caesar: "So, Haymitch, what do you think of the Games having one hundred percent more competitors than usual?"

Haymitch: "I don't see that it makes much difference. They'll still be one hundred percent as stupid as usual, so I figure my odds will be roughly the same."
