New 'Mockingjay Part 1' Still

Click for FULL SIZE

A new still from Mockingjay Part 1 has surfaced online.  The still features Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen and Elizabeth Banks as Effie Trinket. You can see Effie's schedule printed on her arm in this picture. A lot of people (including those of us at PP) noticed the schedule printed on Finnick's arm in the movie too.

According to Francis Lawrence, a lot more was shot than was used in Mockingjay Part 1 compared to Catching Fire, so hopefully we'll see more about this detail in the deleted scenes when the DVD comes out!

Lorde Talks 'Mockingjay Part 1' and Yellow Flicker Beat With L.A. Times

There's a great new interview with Lorde in L.A. Times.com about the Mockingjay Part 1 soundtrack and Yellow Flicker Beat. She gives a more insight into the song, songwrighting process and the lyrics than we've heard before, and we though it was pretty fascinating.

From L.A. Times.com:

The low hum that begins "Yellow Flicker Beat" takes the viewer from the final shot of the transformed heroine Katniss Everdeen to the closing credits of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1.

"I liked the idea of the film ending on this close-up of Katniss' face, and then this very creepy, cracked hum kind of signaling your entry into her head, her deepest thoughts and secrets," says New Zealand singer-songwriter Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor, better known as Lorde. "I'd been listening to a lot of spirituals, songs like 'Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child,' and I loved the crackling, flawed sounds, both of the old recordings and the delivery of the vocals, so that definitely had some influence."

"This was my first time writing for a film, and it was important to me that it still felt like my song, not something that would feel out of place at one of my shows," Lorde says via email. "I wanted the song to feel almost stream-of-consciousness, very much Katniss' innermost thoughts, and when writing it, I could feel the lines blurring, my authorial voice overlapping with hers."
And my necklace is of rope / I tie it and untie. People talk to me, but nothing ever hits home / People talk to me, and all the voices just burn holes.
"Obviously I'm not angry in the way that she is at the end of the film, but I could identify with that feeling of everyone wanting Katniss to do a certain thing, and the pressure of that expectation."

Still, Lorde's key contribution is "Yellow Flicker Beat," which catches the Girl on Fire on the verge of stepping into a holocaust. The quiet of that hum explodes into a chorus declaring, "This is the start / Of how it all ends."

"Katniss has so much swirling under the surface, so many different voices both internal and external telling her what to do. A storm isn't smooth, a fight isn't quiet, and I don't think Katniss is just one thing at once," she says.

"I also liked the 'fingers laced together and I made a little prison, and I'm locking up everyone who ever laid a finger on me' part — it alluded to the 'playing God' nature of Katniss' role as Mockingjay and is probably the most empowering line I've ever written."

New-ish Mockingjay Part 1 Image of Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen

The Capitol Couture Tumblr account posted a cool, new-ish poster type  image of Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen! We say new-ISH because this is a doctored up version of the Empire Magazine cover.

And it was also used as the invitation for the Mockingjay Part 1 premiere in Los Angeles!

New 'Mockingjay Part 1' Clip - Meet The Panem Rebels

Katniss Everdeen meets the Panem Rebellion in this new clip from Mockingjay Part 1 "Meeting The Crew." In a scene that's slightly expanded from the Mockingjay book version of events, Katniss meets the rebels from District 13 in a hovercraft on her way to District 8.

This clip is the one that's hidden in the OurLeaderTheMockingjay app - it's on the hovercraft in the cockpit. Go there (virtually), turn around and look behind you once you're inside - there is a small play triangle button.

Production Notes From Mockingjay Part 1 Released - Runtime, Cast & Crew Interviews + Much More

The awesome production notes for Mockingjay Part 1 have been released on the LionsgateUK PR site and they are a wealth of really cool information from the film. Everything from the official runtime - 123 minutes - to cast interviews, interviews with the make-up artisits, production designers - it's a Mockingjay Jackpot!

Here are OUR favorite bits from the document:

Jennifer Lawrence on Katniss Everdeen:

She goes into the propos feeling like a pawn, like the Mockingjay is just a symbol she’s not connected to or passionate about. The whole idea of the propos is to get people fired up, to band together - so Katniss faking at being something that she’s not doesn’t work. It’s only when she sees the human cost in District 8 that a true spark is ignited. The more she sees, the more it becomes a personal fight for her.

Elizabeth Banks on Effie:

Her new job is to ensure Katniss is the ultimate celebrity face of the rebellion, the perfect Mockingjay. Her job hasn’t really changed from the Games. Effie also remains one of the few people who’s never lied to Katniss. She never had to, because she truly didn’t know what was going on, and now she still has Katniss’ trust,

Producer Nina Jacobson:

It’s a very tense and powerful story and the emotions on screen are surprisingly deep. It takes you to places you will not expect to be taken. It’s provocative, thoughtful and up to the last minutes of the film, the way it unfolds is shocking.

Sam Claflin on Finnick Odair:

"You find out that everything you knew about Finnick, all his bravado and verve, has been largely for show," he comments. "I think for any actor, playing the underside of a beloved character is incredibly interesting' There are moments where he flashes a smile where you'll remember he's still the old Finnick, with all those elements everyone knows and loves, but at the same time, there's a new side I get to reveal."

There are fantastic details on the costumes and make-up - did you know Evan Ross is wearing prosthetic EARS in the film?!

Evan Ross wore prosthetic ears for the prodigiously pierced Messalla. "Messalla has notches cut out of one of his ears, implant piercings and he has quite a bit of Capitol jewelry that would have been typical of someone in his line of work," Neill points out, "And Evan was actually willing to get all those piercings but we would have had to wait for them to heal, so instead, we used prosthetics that Glenn built - and the result was really cool looking."

There's so much incredible information included - it's definitely a must-read. Download the Mockingjay Part 1 production notes HERE

Thanks to our friends at QuarterQuell for the heads up!

'Mockingjay Part 1' in EW's Holiday Movie Preview Issue

There's a new Mockingjay Part 1 still in the Holiday Movie Preview issue of Entertainment Weekly (digital edition is out now). Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence), Gale (Liam Hemsworth), Paylor (Patina Miller), Boggs (Mahershala Ali), and Pollux (Elden Henson) trudging through District 8.

The still is a part of the Holiday Movie Preview calendar in the issue and there's no other article relating to the film in the magazine except a little blurb in an interview with Julianne Moore:

Director Francis Lawrence cast Moore as rebel president Alma Coin in next month's The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 immediately after she approached him about the part. "Once we knew she wanted it, that was it - done," Lawrence says. Moore, who was introduced to the book trilogy through her kids, 12 and 16, then worked with Lawrence to develop the character beyond what was in Suzanne Collins' novel.
